Skin Exfoliating

Why Exfoliate?

Exfoliation helps to speed up the process of new cell turn over removing the thinnest and outermost layer of skin consisting of dead skin cells. These dead skin cells leave a dull and lifeless appearance on the skin. When we are young our skin has naturally a faster rate in which the skin produces new skin cells. By exfoliating we increase lymph and blood circulation, aids in detoxification (since your skin is your largest organ of elimination), the light pressure to your skin is calming to the nervous system, and will encourage the new growth of skin cells.

On average as adults we generate a new layer of skin every two to four weeks. Dead skin cells left on your skin can clog pores leading to blackheads and blemishes. You can improve your complexion and aid the cycle by exfoliating.

Types of Exfoliates

Mechanical and chemical are the two main ways to exfoliate.

Mechanical exfoliates contain minuscule pieces of grit that, when rubbed on your skin, dislodge the dead skin cells. Common mechanical exfoliates are microderm face clothes, facial scrub mitts, loofa, sugar scrubs and/salt scrubs. The manual scrubbing motion stimulates and improves circulation which helps with the appearance of cellulite.

Chemical exfoliates do the same task as mechanical exfoliates but by using mild acids in place of small particles or brushes to exfoliate the skin. Exfoliating products usually contain alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, or salicylic acids. The acids in these products remove the outer layer of the skin by dissolving the layer of dead skin cells. Chemical products are pushed in all different skin product markets but be careful not to buy over the counter without consulting first with your doctor.

How to exfoliate

Exfoliate your entire body once or twice a week. Quick 5 minute scrubs daily are good for you to reduce stress and decrease blood pressure. You can use a circular motion, Start from the feet and legs and then your arms and shoulders and hands. Continue with the back then up through the torso towards the heart. After you have exfoliated rinse your body with cool water removing any residue and will further activate blood circulation throughout the body. Pat dry and follow with a skin moisturizer to keep your skin soft.
